A fantastic wooden sculpture of The Mad Sweeney has recently found its home along the river Barrow in St Mullins just beside The Mullichain Cafe! Sculpted by Tommy Kelly of Bevel Furniture and Woodworking School.
The historic Mad Sweeney has found a perfect home in a site that oozes history and heritage with an early Christian monastic settlement, a Norman Motte and Bailey, a large graveyard with many insurgents from the 1798 Rebellion, 19th century flour and woollen mills on the quayside area and the river with its history in both fishing and canal boat transportation. The sculpture is inspired by the medieval tale of Suibhne mac Colmáin, king of the Dál nAraidi, who was driven insane by the curse of Saint Rónán Finn. Eventually, after seven years of wandering, Suibhne arrived at 'The House of St. Moling', St Mullin's in County Carlow, and Moling sheltered him after hearing the madman's story.
St Mullins is a beautiful place to explore and there’s a beautiful walk along the Barrow Way in the direction of Graiguenamanagh. When you have finished discovering all the area has to offer don’t forget to pay a visit to The Mullicháin Café to grab a bite to eat – the reviews speak for themselves. Peace, superb views and lovely food is on offer here seven days a week until October.
